7 Questions to Ask your Interior Designer Before Hiring Them
Starting an interior design project is a marathon and not a sprint. Before getting started you have to do the due diligence to ensure that the interior designer you are embarking on this journey with is “the one.”
Here are 7 key questions you should ask an interior designer before hiring them;
Do you have an interior design portfolio I can look at?
Always look through the interior designer’s portfolio before committing to them. The portfolio indicates the interior designer’s skills, style, versatility, and planning process.
2. Do you have client references you can share with me?
Positive client references are a great indicator of how credible, professional and trustworthy the interior designer is.
3. How would you describe your design style?
Questions such as what inspires you, what is your personal style and how it translates into your work will give you an insight into the interior designers’ creative process and whether it aligns with yours.
4. Who is on your team?
The team handling your project can either make it or break it. It is prudent for you to know who will be supporting the interior designer throughout the process. This includes their suppliers, installers, craftspeople, etc.
5. How do you present your design concept ideas?
As a client, it is important for you to visualize the re-designed space in a way that you can comprehend. Professional interior designers should be able to present their ideas through vision boards, 3D impressions or hand-drawn sketches.
6. What happens if I don’t like your design?
This question is important because it prepares you for how the interior designer adjusts or resolves problems that might arise. If they are not flexible to adjust in the case that you don’t like their designs then that could pose a potential problem.
7. How involved should I be at each stage of the project?
The interior design process should be collaborative between the designer and the client, so a level of involvement on your side will be necessary. This could be through attending meetings or site visits to gain your feedback and opinions on certain decisions, etc.
